Home / Treatments / Wrinkle relaxers

Three wrinkle relaxers, and how I choose between them.

Xeomin, Dysport and Daxxify. They are not interchangeable. They behave differently in different parts of a face, and which one I reach for depends on the area, on how strong the muscle is, and on how you have responded before.

What one area means

Dosing and pricing here both run by area, so this is what an area is. Most people who have never had this done start with one and come back.

Horizontal lines across the forehead, the area treated first in most foreheads
ForeheadThe horizontal lines that show when the brows lift.
Vertical lines between the brows, the area commonly called the frown lines
Between the browsThe vertical pair, often read as a frown nobody meant.
Fine lines fanning from the outer corner of the eye, commonly called crow's feet
Around the eyesThe lines that fan out from the outer corner on a smile.

Illustrative images showing where each area sits. They are not patients of this practice and they are not treatment results.

How is it priced?

By area, not by unit. Units are not comparable across brands, and per-unit pricing invites games I would rather not play. You get your exact number at the consultation, before anything is booked, and the two-week follow-up is always part of it.

Which one should I have?

It depends on the area and on how you have responded before. Xeomin is the most stripped-down of the three. Dysport generally spreads a little more, which I tend to like across a forehead. Daxxify is peptide-stabilised and generally lasts longer, and that is what the extra money buys. If you have had a neurotoxin before, telling me how long it lasted is the single most useful thing you can bring to the appointment. I do not carry the Allergan line, and here is why.

How long does it last?

Generally three to four months for most people, sometimes longer with Daxxify. It wears off gradually rather than all at once, and how fast depends on the area, the dose and you.

When will I see it?

Something around day three or four, most of it by day ten, and the honest answer at two weeks. Judging it at day three is how people talk themselves into thinking it did not work. That is why the follow-up is at two weeks and why it is part of the price.

Does it hurt?

Not much, and it is quick. The needle is very fine. Most people are more bothered by the idea of it than by the thing itself.

When I would say wait, or no

Every line below is a reason I would ask you to come back later or send you somewhere else. Worth reading before you book.

  • Anyone inside about four weeks of a wedding, a photograph or a trip.
  • Anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Anyone with a neuromuscular condition, until we have talked it through properly.
  • Anyone asking me to treat an area where the result would look worse rather than better. There are foreheads where relaxing everything drops a brow, and I will say so.

Questions people actually ask

Is a unit of one brand the same as a unit of another?

No. Units are defined by each manufacturer's own assay, so they are not comparable across brands. This is exactly why per-unit price comparisons between brands produce a meaningless number, and why I price by area.

What if I do not like it?

Come to the two-week follow-up and say so. Some of it I can adjust. Some of it I cannot, and it wears off. I would rather hear it at two weeks than read it in a review at four months.

Can I have it done on my lunch break?

Yes. Allow about half an hour for a first appointment because we will talk first, and less after that.
