Why I don't carry Botox.
It is the question I am asked most, so here is the whole answer, including the part that is just my preference rather than a clinical fact.
So what do you actually carry?
Three neurotoxins, none of them Allergan's. Xeomin from Merz. Dysport from Galderma. Daxxify from Revance. I also carry Galderma's Restylane range, Merz's Radiesse, and Evolus's Evolysse on the filler side. I do not stock Botox or Juvederm.
The three I do carryIs one of them better?
No, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. They are different molecules with different behaviour, and the right one depends on the area and on you.
- Xeomin is the most stripped-down of the ones I carry: no complexing proteins around the molecule.
- Dysport spreads a little more, which I generally like across a forehead.
- Daxxify is peptide-stabilised and generally lasts longer. That is what the extra money buys, and for some people it is worth it and for others it is not.
Then why not carry the one everyone has heard of?
Honestly? Because carrying it would change how I talk to you. The brand everybody knows is the brand people ask for by name, and the moment I stock it, the conversation stops being about which molecule suits your forehead and starts being about which one you saw on television.
There is also a straightforward practical reason. The brand everybody asks for comes with the industry's biggest rewards programme attached, and staying outside it keeps that programme out of the conversation between us entirely.
Is a unit a unit?
No, and this is where per-unit pricing gets used badly. Units are not comparable across brands: they are defined by each manufacturer's own assay, so twenty units of one product is not twenty units of another. Shopping on price-per-unit across brands produces a number that cannot be compared to anything. That is exactly why I price by area.
What if I have always had the other one?
Then tell me, and tell me how you liked it, how long it lasted and what you did not like. That is genuinely useful information, and it usually points at which of the three I would start you on.
When I would say wait, or no
Every line below is a reason I would ask you to come back later or send you somewhere else. Worth reading before you book.
- Anyone who wants a specific brand for reasons that are not clinical. I would rather you go where it is stocked than have me talk you into a substitute.
- Anyone inside about four weeks of a wedding, a photograph or a trip.
- Anyone who has had a reaction to a neurotoxin before, until we have talked properly about which one and what happened.
